How to make Marigold cream

Updated: Jul 2, 2021

Marigold is an amazing plant with many medicinal properties and using it as a skin remedy is one of its best uses. It is antiseptic having antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral properties. The herb astringes capillaries which makes it effective for cuts, wounds, varicose veins and various inflammatory conditions (minor burns, acne, rashes, fungal conditions – ringworm, athlete’s foot and thrush). It is also helpful for nappy rash and cradle cap or sore nipples from breast feeding (wipe off before feeding) and can be soothing for eczema or any similar problems like psoriasis.

Creams are great as they blend with the skin, can be cooling and soothing while at the same time allowing the skin to breathe and sweat naturally.

Making a cream involves combining oil or fat and water in an emulsion.

They can deteriorate quite quickly and are best stored in dark, airtight jars in the fridge (up to 3 months).

You will need:

· 30g dry herb or 75g fresh

· 150g emulsifying wax

· 70g glycerine

· 80ml water

· glass/stainless steel bowl

· amber (or any dark) glass jar

· muslin cloth

1. Melt wax in glass jar over boiling water

2. Add glycerine, water and herb while stirring for 3 hours

3. Strain the mixture through a muslin cloth into a bowl (stir continuously until cool)

4. With a small spatula or knife, move the set cream into the storage jars

I like to add a few drops of tea tree essential oil into the final mixture as this will help prolong the shelf life.

Don’t forget to label and refrigerate!

Remember, all herbs should be used responsibly, and it is important to understand that people may react differently to a given substance, and some are known to interact with certain pharmaceuticals. Whenever sourcing your own herbs, ensure correct identification of the plant in question as many useful plants can be confused with harmful ones, sometimes causing deadly consequences. We encourage you to make your own health choices based in accordance to your doctor.
